The Charleston County School Board ain’t asking for much, just a little help from Warren Buffett … or someone like him.

The board recently advertised a couple of open positions on its Audit and Finance Committee — folks willing to spend 2-4 hours a month looking at the district’s finances and making informed recommendations.

Thing is, the job requirements for these volunteer positions are, well, ambitious.

The minimum qualifications include work experience in finance, financial auditing, banking, economic development, business management or information technology for a “medium-large corporation.”

OK, but the preferred requirements are really starry-eyed. They want a current or previous chief financial officer in a large organization — defined as a company with more than 1,500 employees and annual revenues in excess of $200 million.

Basically, the board is looking for business firepower in the same orbit as Darla Moore, Ben Navarro and Anita Zucker.

This is what most people are probably thinking: So now the Charleston County School Board wants expertise?

You may remember School Board members caught much grief last year when they tinkered with another of their volunteer committees. They got rid of some medical professionals and other experts on a health curriculum advisory committee.

Those were people who presumably knew what they were talking about, too, but they were let go before their terms ended. The board claimed it wanted broader (read: more socially conservative) perspectives.

Which is just what the district needed — a layman’s view of science for an organization charged with, you know, educating children.

By the measure of last year’s circus, you’d think this board would also want “broad perspectives” on Audit and Finance. Like maybe someone carrying massive credit card debt, or somebody who thinks the key to financial success is investing in Trump sneakers. You know, diversity.

But no, the School Board now wants actual experts. Because this is about money.

“We felt that what we were lacking was someone with CFO experience or auditing experience because we are audit and finance,” board Chairman Keith Grybowski told WCSC-TV. “That’s where we started narrowing down as to what type of individuals could we get that could really help us with these very lofty issues that we deal with.”

Grybowski and Audit and Finance Committee Chairman Daron Lee Calhoun II decided to go big in that direction, obviously. And frankly, they were right.

The Charleston County School District, with a budget in the neighborhood of $800 million, may need a tax increase this year because of a potential $50 million funding gap. Final numbers aren't in yet.

Part of the reason for that is the federal spigot of COVID dollars drying up. The district knew this was coming, and hasn’t done anything wrong ... well, except for using one-time money to pay for ongoing needs. It shouldn’t take Warren Buffett to tell ‘em that’s a bad business decision.

But it’s also not rare for school boards and local governments to do that.

The School Board may be dreaming here in its quest for all-star candidates. But there are any number of local residents who’d fit that bill — dozens of them retired and living on Kiawah and Seabrook alone.

Calhoun and Grybowski are taking their jobs seriously, and that’s a welcome sign. But of course, you have to ask why student curriculum isn’t treated quite as seriously as the money.

The answer is because last year they let board member and Moms for Liberty mouthpiece Ed Kelley loose with the Health Advisory Committee (wonder if his colleagues call him “Sex Ed”?).

This time, thankfully, the adults are apparently holding the reins.

Which makes you think, maybe the School Board should do that in every situation. Because the politics the School Board has played with its curriculum and its musical chairs superintendent mess have hurt its reputation.

And that makes it less likely that some business wunderkind would willingly stick her head into this lion’s mouth. Most folks with common sense would be wary.

They shouldn’t be. Sure, the board deserves criticism for its health advisory committee politics, the way it mishandled the superintendent situation and its treatment of Michelle Simmons, the district’s now-permanent chief academic officer.

That doesn’t mean we stop helping out. It’s an all-hands-on-deck moment.

The district this year has to decide how best to keep the ball rolling on recent academic gains, beef up staff at schools with high poverty and retain teachers when they are leaving the field in droves.

Solutions to those problems will help everyone, not just a fractured board. Perhaps some assistance here will prompt board members to see the value in expertise everywhere. You can dream.

So maybe someone with serious financial chops and some free time should them help out.

Just steer clear of any discussions about sex ed.
